This is truly the best chocolate cake recipe that you’ll ever eat. I cannot say enough great things about it. It’s moist, dense and simply delicious. This recipe is just for the cake itself so decorate it with your favorite frosting (recipes for my favorites are coming).

The best chocolate cake recipe I’ve ever made. It’s moist, dense, and so chocolatey. It is truly one of my favorite all-time recipes and a sure-fire winner every time.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups (240 g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups (400 g) sugar
  • 1 tsp (6 g) baking soda
  • 1 tsp (6 g) kosher salt
  • 2 sticks (220 g) unsalted butter
  • 1 cup (240 mL) water
  • 1/3 cup (33 g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp (2 g) instant espresso powder
  • 1/2 cup (120 mL) buttermilk
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 tsp (10 mL) vanilla extract

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Grease and line 2, 9-inch round pans or prepare 24 cupcake liners in cupcake pans.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking soda and salt until well combined.
  4. In a small saucepan, melt butter over low to medium heat, stirring occasionally.
  5. Add water, cocoa powder and espresso powder to the butter and whisk to combine.
  6. Allow to boil for 30 seconds before removing from the heat to cool slightly.
  7. In a small bowl whisk together buttermilk, eggs and vanilla.
  8. To the dry ingredients add the slightly cooled chocolate mixture and whisk until just combined.
  9. Add the remainder of the wet ingredients to the large bowl and stir to combine.  Do not overmix.
  10. Pour cake batter evenly between the two prepared pans or 24 cupcake liners in pans.
  11. For 9 inch rounds bake for 40 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean from the center.
  12. For cupcakes bake for 20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean from a center cupcake
  13. Allow cakes to cool in the pan for about 10-15 minutes before removing to a rack to cool completely.
  14. Decorate as desired once cakes are completely cooled.
