My favorite recipe for a basic roll-out sugar cookie. Feel free to add whatever flavors you’d like to this basic dough and cut into whatever shape fits your occasion. This recipe is a sure-fire win!

Ingredients

  • 2 sticks (220 g) Unsalted Butter, softened
  • 2/3 cup (132 g) Sugar
  • 1/4 tsp. (1.5 g) Kosher Salt
  • 1/4 tsp. (1 g) Baking Powder
  • 1 Large Egg
  • 1 1/2 tsp. (8 mL) Vanilla Extract
  • 2 1/2 cups (300 g) Flour

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, cream together softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  2. Add in salt, baking powder, egg and vanilla.  Beat until well combined.
  3. Stir in flour until mixture forms a smooth dough.
  4. Divide dough into two equal portions and press into discs.
  5. Cover discs with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
  6. Roll out dough, one disc at a time, to a 1/4 inch thickness.
  7. Cut out desired shape of cookies and place on a lined baking sheet.
  8. Refrigerate cut out dough on the cookie sheet for 15 minutes.
  9. Meanwhile preheat oven to 350 F with a rack in the middle position.
  10. After 15 minutes refrigeration, bake cookies one pan at a time for 10-12 minutes.  Cookies should be set but not brown when done.
  11. Remove to a cooling rack to cool completely.
  12. Eat as is or decorate as desired.
